People ‘overshare’ when they interact with others through the screens of computers and smartphones. Oversharing means to divulge more of their inner feelings, opinions and sexuality than they would in person, or even over the phone. Text messaging, Facebooking, tweeting, camming, blogging, online dating, and internet porn are vehicles of this oversharing, which blurs the boundary between public and private life. This book examines these ‘presentations of self’, acknowledging that we are now much more public about what used to be private. The book concludes with reflections on the impact of oversharing on identity, friendship, sexuality, family and democracy, and suggests steps people can take to re-establish the boundary between public and personal life.

I honestly cannot believe this work was published, especially as a peer-reviewed title from a respectable academic publisher. There is so much to critique here that I do not even know where to start, so I will skip to my main point: I assigned this in my media class as an example of A. Poor research, B. Extremely biased writing, and C. Weak, fallacy-laden arguments. Not only does the author talk to the reader like he/she is an idiot, but he also lacks any coherent structure to organize his ramblings. I would only ever use this text in a course as an example of what not to do and how not to think. There are plenty of other titles that discuss these concepts without focusing solely on the author's outdated, highly problematic, and totally out-of-touch ideas.

I only read this because it was required for my Human Sexuality class, and I think it's one of the most poorly-written things I've ever had to read for any class. It's poorly sourced (there are very few facts backing up anything the author claims about the eeeeeevils of technology) and his tone reads as baffled and panicky--a knee-jerk reaction that I've seen many people make against social media. Do some people behave poorly on social media? Of course. But they are generally the same people that behave poorly off-line. Is there (gasp!) pornography on the internet? Yes, of course, but objectifying people did not begin with the internet. Many of the things he argues are unique to online interactions are symptomatic of previously-existing conditions in our culture, not scary new things that happen because we have facebook and craigslist. Also, why does he think that people go to craigslist to date?

It's all just an old man bitter that he doesn't understand technology. There are a few logical points about sharing private information everywhere, but most of it is opinions or a sever lack of facts. If you are a grumpy old man who wants to be in an echo chamber of the same, this is your book. If not...maybe you'll get a laugh out of it, at the very least.

This is what this guy makes me think of. This book is absurd.

This is a gregarious rant of a baby boomer complaining about kids these days. He blatantly contradicts himself by demonstrating repeatedly that the behaviors mentioned are universal merely exacerbated by the accessibility of the internet.

written poorly and does not make much sense on how it is written.

Bought this book for school and ended up really enjoying it. Had some great points about technology and how it is integrated into our social world.

it was my course material, and I have to say the writer is an excellent author to think about the current situation of Internet Age
